Growing in the semi-deciduous forests of West and Central Africa, a typical Mukulungu tree often reaches heights of up to 50 meters and diameters of up to 2 meters. This wood is exceptionally dense, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications, particularly in marine environments and structural construction. Mukulungu has an average dried weight of approximately 940 kg/m³ and its Janka hardness rating is about 1,940 lbf (8,620 N), which is the same density as Padauk.
The heartwood of Mukulungu is characterized by a rich red-brown color with darker brown veins, offering a visually appealing and luxurious appearance. The sapwood is clearly demarcated from the heartwood. The wood features a fine texture with a straight or interlocked grain, enhancing its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.
